Isaiah 33:1-16

In the Dark of Night

  • 1 Ah, you destroyer,
  • who yourself have not been destroyed,
  • you traitor,
  • whom none has betrayed!
  • When you have ceased to destroy,
  • you will be destroyed;
  • and when you have finished betraying,
  • they will betray you.
  • 2 O LORD, be gracious to us; we wait for you.
  • Be our arm every morning,
  • our salvation in the time of trouble.
  • 3 At the tumultuous noise peoples flee;
  • when you lift yourself up, nations are scattered,
  • 4 and your spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers;
  • as locusts leap, it is leapt upon.
  • 5 The LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high;
  • he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness,
  • 6 and he will be the stability of your times,
  • abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge;
  • the fear of the LORD is Zion’s treasure.

  • (Isaiah 33:1-6, ESV)
  • 7 Behold, their heroes cry in the streets;
  • the envoys of peace weep bitterly.
  • 8 The highways lie waste;
  • the traveler ceases.
  • Covenants are broken;
  • cities are despised;
  • there is no regard for man.
  • 9 The land mourns and languishes;
  • Lebanon is confounded and withers away;
  • Sharon is like a desert,
  • and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.
  • 10 “Now I will arise,” says the LORD,
  • “now I will lift myself up;
  • now I will be exalted.
  • 11 You conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble;
  • your breath is a fire that will consume you.
  • 12 And the peoples will be as if burned to lime,
  • like thorns cut down, that are burned in the fire.”
  • (Isaiah 33:7-12, ESV)
  • 13 Hear, you who are far off, what I have done;
  • and you who are near, acknowledge my might.
  • 14 The sinners in Zion are afraid;
  • trembling has seized the godless:
  • “Who among us can dwell with the consuming fire?
  • Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?”
  • 15 He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly,
  • who despises the gain of oppressions,
  • who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe,
  • who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed
  • and shuts his eyes from looking on evil,
  • 16 he will dwell on the heights;
  • his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks;
  • his bread will be given him; his water will be sure.
  • (Isaiah 33:13-16, ESV)
  • Main Point
  • These verses show the mighty nature of God
  • The enemy stands against God’s people
  • The enemy will not stand, but will be destroyed
  • The result of which is awe over God’s devastation
  • The people are able to learn what is good and right by seeking God’s character
  • Application Points
  • In the Dark of Night
  • In today’s text we find two facts about reality
  • There is both pain and healing…sorrow and joy
  • We experience incredible darkness, and incredible light
  • The Assyrians are and represent the darkness
  • They were powerful conquerors over this region, and all the peoples quaked
  • Imagine the destitution
  • They thought they could placate the Assyrians by offering tribute…yet still only the sword instead of peace
  • Application Points
  • In the Dark of Night (2)
  • The darkness of the world offers us peace
  • It claims that if we should only agree with this much, then they will leave us alone
  • Well, our culture shows the ramifications of paying a tribute to darkness
  • It doesn’t matter if yesterday you fought on the worlds side, if you disagree today you are nothing
  • Why is this?
  • The darkness is never satisfied with some or a part
  • It will not be enough to give lip service…we must bend the knee
  • Our culture says much to this
  • Application Points
  • In the Dark of Night (3)
  • We are in a state much like the ancients
  • Even now there are school districts forcing children to say prayers to ancient Aztec deities
  • For many generations we have had the luxury of living in a society which was dominated by Christian thought
  • We find paganism in our schools
  • We find individuals worshipping sticks and rocks instead of the living God
  • Application Points
  • In the Dark of Night (4)
  • Yes this is what is happening and a reason why is because we have failed miserably
  • We have believed our envoys would be enough to placate the world, not realizing the world is not satisfied with some
  • We are in a dark night currently
  • Our culture is deteriorating, too many Churches have lost their prophetic voice
  • What can we do?
  • Thankfully we know something important
  • We all recognize we are not enough
  • He has scattered our darkness by His Light
  • Application Points
  • In the Dark of Night (5)
  • The Lord has arisen
  • We know this because we have experienced His grace, mercy, peace, in our own lives
  • The nations scatter before Him, and the peoples flee
  • The Lord often comes to us when we are in our darkest moment
  • Because it is in this moment we recognize out utter dependence
  • The darkness should not cause us fear, but to see Who is high and lifted up
  • Application Points
  • In the Dark of Night (6)
  • The pagan deities are fake gods
  • Those with power in the world today, while they may be more powerful than us, compared to God they have no power
  • The flames around us are temporary, God, however, is an eternal flame
  • This should cause in us dread
  • This is true power
  • What can stand against such a flame?
  • Application Points
  • In the Dark of Night (7)
  • The answer is righteousness
  • How do we know that living in accordance with the will of God…can withstand the perfect fury?
  • Jesus Christ stood firm in righteousness
  • He was crushed in death, but arose in life
  • The only way it is possible for us to overcome this darkness, and to stand in this incredible light, is by God’s grace
  • In knowing Him we have what we are told today, stability
  • Application Points
  • In the Dark of Night (8)
  • What is the manner of this stability?
  • All of reality
  • “He will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is Zion’s treasure.”
  • Knowing God…causes us to have stability in this life
  • Everything is looking incredibly bleak and dark
  • Our God is still seated High and He is lifted up
  • Our peace and assurance will never be found in this world
  • In the dark of night, He is our eternal light
  • Application Points
  • The Gospel of Christ
  • Origins
  • Where we began
  • Fall
  • What went wrong
  • Redemption
  • How it is fixed
  • Glorification
  • Where it at leads
